About CSUCI's Plot-a-Thon Event

At Cal State Channel Islands, there is a data visualization event called the Plot-a-Thon, where students come together to learn new skills as they work with data, use data visualization software, and compete with other students. As of 2022, our sponsors included HubSpot, The Trade Desk, and Yardi.

The Roles

Along with my team of five, I was in charge of the social media management of the data visualization event and creating of flyers and badges.

The Outcome

With social media content management, a team member and I brainstormed for Instagram grid posts, carousels, videos, and stories to share with students.

We scheduled four months of content to inform students about the event's upcoming training, networking, and information sessions.

My team member and I prepared the social media templates, and we reused some of the templates from the year before.

With the event's sponsors, we had to send out our templates and posts to receive approval from each sponsor to post them promptly.

Throughout the social media campaign, we used relevant hashtags for the event and made content engaging to increase the post metrics and followers.

Compared to the analytics from last semester, the help of other organizations and school accounts has improved Plot-a-Thon's social media efforts and increased interactions.

Along with social media, I helped with the graphic design of the competition badges for the Plot-a-Thon Canvas course and the event gifts we gave out to participants. The event gifts consisted of t-shirts and a reusable water bottle.

The badges were for students who have completed the Canvas course on a chosen topic. The intention of them was for students would be able to post them on their LinkedIn accounts to express their success.

Flyers were another marketing form for students and faculty to acknowledge important upcoming events and when the competition started. These flyers were posted digitally throughout campus and relayed to students by professors.

At the end of the competition, we collaborated with our sponsors for a giveaway as a post-event gift to five lucky students who engaged in our social media giveaway.
